Lethbridge Speed Skating Association

The Lethbridge Speed Skating Association, along with the Alberta Amateur Speed Skating Association and Speed Skating Canada are proud to host the  Canada West Short Track Championships to be held at Nicholas Sheran Arena in Lethbridge, Alberta on March 29th and 30th, 2014.  This prestigious event will bring together the best skaters in the Training to Train stage of development for the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and the territories of Yukon and Northwest Territories. Canada West serves as the primary introduction to national competition where skaters aged 11 to 15 will represent their provincial or territorial branch in a championship age class competition.

The local organizing committee is also excited to announce that National Team member, World Cup Medalist, and Olympian Gilmore Junio will be the guest speaker at the Welcome Banquet to be held at the Lethbridge Lodge on March 28th.   Gilmore’s display of sportsmanship and team spirit made him a natural choice to come and inspire these young athletes.

The Lethbridge Speed Skating Club will be represented by three local skaters who earned spots on Team Alberta by competing in team trials in Lloydminster, Alberta in December and Calgary last month.  Kaleb Muller and Mason Muller from Taber will be competing in the T2T Boys 14 and T2T Boys 12 categories, respectively, while Aaron Cooney from Lethbridge will be racing in the T2T Boys 13 category.  All three of these skaters are excited to participate in this culminating event after an exciting season where Cooney won a team gold medal in Quebec earlier this season and each of the Muller brothers brought home multiple medals from Alberta Winter Games.

About the LSSA!

Affiliated with the Alberta Speed Skating Association and Speed Skating Canada, the club provides coaching, training, and racing opportunities to its members in a fun, competetive, atmosphere.

Club Membership

Our season runs from October through March of each year. Club members skate Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings at the Labour Ice Arena in the North end.  Each skater will be given 2 sessions a week on two of these evenings (either Tuesday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday) depending on their skill level.

There are a number of opportunities for club members to race throughout the province during the season including our own provincially sanctioned meet which will be held in March. There are also long track meets in Calgary and Red Deer that many skaters attend in January. Racing is encouraged but not required.

Learn to Speed Skate

Our club also offers two Learn to Speed Skate sessions during the year.  Session 1 runs from October to December while Session 2 runs from January to March.  Each session costs $90 and consist of 10 one hour lessons.  Learn to Skate participants are invited to participate in a "Mini-Meet" at the end of their session.
